The Origin of Hope
History of the World
In the Beginning: The Primordials create the world from Chaos
Time passes: Bored with their creation the Primordials turn their attention to other matters, leaving behind the Titans, Giants and Dwarves to mind the world while they are gone. The Primal spirits of the World awake and begin to spread their influence.
More time passes: The Old Gods find the world, and shape it further, adding their own races to the World. The most favored of these being the Eldarin.
In the blink of a eye: The Godswar breaks out across multiple worlds and planes of existence. On the World it is mainly fought by proxy between the Eldarin civilization and the Giants and Dwarves. However at times the fury of the battle between the Gods and the Primordials spills into the world.
A millennia of Warfare ensues: It is going badly for the Eldarin, however the Dwarven civilization rebels against their creators, breaking their bonds of slavery and joining with the Eldarin. The tide of war changes, both on the World and elsewhere.
Another two centuries of conflict later: The Gods win, destroying or imprisoning the Primordials. The Eladrin and Dwarven civilizations enter into their golden Age.
A millennia of peace passes: At some point in this time Humanity first arrives in the West, an event that goes unnoticed by the Eldarin and Dwarves initially. Other races also begin to grow within the world. The Halflings in particular begin to spread across the plains. Evil beings to enter the world as well. The Minotaur race is created.
3,000 years ago: The Old Gods begin to retreat from the world, nobody alive now knows why. It happens slowly, but surely.
1000 years ago: The cults of The Light and The Dark arise. Mostly amongst the more primitive races in the world, however the Old Gods still hold sway in most areas.
900 years ago: The Minotaur race unites under a powerful Dark Cult leader (Broka the Binder). They pour from their mountain homes and attack the Eldarin civilization. Only to find the Eldarin gone, retreated from the world, and only the Abandoned around. The Minotaur civilization begins in the East, worship of the Dark is common, but still cultish. The Old Gods no longer answer prayers and begin to be forgotten.
750 years ago: The fall of the Minotaur civilization. Also during this time the first cities are being built by Humanity in the West. The fall of the Minotaur civilization into bloodlust and civil war throws the East into Chaos. The cult of the Light spreads amongst Humanity in the East.
730 years ago: The noble families in the West make pacts with the cult of the Dark, and the first Tieflings are created. Humanity begins to take over the old Eldarin and Minotaur cities in the East.
680 years ago: The cult of the Dark has grown into a full blown Religion, particularly in the West. Creatures of great evil are summoned into the World and war breaks out in the West. Those noble families who did not become Tieflings attempt to resist, but it is futile.
600 years ago: The West is now fully under the control of the Dark, and their armies, with Devil’s at their front, march into the central plains and mountains.
598 years ago: Meanwhile in the East, Tarn the Warleader, a cultist of the Light and Warlord beings to unite the other Warlords of the East.
565 years ago: The East is united under Tarn, now Emperor Tarn the Uniter. He founds the Empire of the Light. Meanwhile the Armies of the West now control the central plains, the Halflings having fled either to the East or having taken shelter with the Dwarves. The Dwarves are now surrounded within their mountain citadels, and send envoys to the new Emperor asking for assistance.
563 years ago: Eager for Battle Tarn leads his Empire against the Dark. Things go well at first, especially where Cultists of Light fight.
562 years ago: After the initial surprise of organized resistance from the East, the Armies of the West rally and counterattack.
530 years ago: Much occurs during this time, however slowly the forces of the West begin to press further into the East. Several Dwarven cities are also taken during this time, including the great high mountain Citadel of High Dwelling. The Dark creatures and cultists at the heart of the Western army take this Citadel as their new base of operations, and convert it into a Dark Fortress Cathedral. It is here, and not from the West itself that the armies are now commanded.
528 years ago: A group of heroes, four in number come together. They come from the West, the East, the central plains and the Dwarven deeps. All of them oppose the Dark. They will be called The Heroes of Light.
525 years ago: The Heroes of Light appear before Tarn, each mounted on their own mighty Metallic Dragon and pledge their services. Construction of the Pavilion of Light begins under the instructions of a Dark Eldarin cultist of the Light known simply as the Pious One.
520 years ago: Several Tiefling noble families rebel in the West (The Heroes of Light are rumored to have been involved in this), making a grab for power while their dark masters are occupied in the Central mountains. They succeed in taking the relatively undefended West.
515 years ago: The Light Wall flows forth from the great Pavilion of Light destroying much of the Armies of the Dark in the East. The Final War begins, with the remaining forces of the Dark now facing attack from their former servants in the West, the Empire and the Dwarves.
500 years ago: The final battle occurs at the Cathedral of the Dark high in the central mountains. Just at the final battle began, the Heroes of Light addressed the commanders of the united Dwarf, Western and Eastern armies. They stated that they had a fight of their own, a fight that could mean the end of Darkness in the world, but that they had to strike now while the Dark was distracted. Thus, as the battle raged below, the heroes mounted on their Dragons rode up into the Dark Clouds above the Cathedral. With the loss of the Heroes and their Dragons, the battle began to go badly for the united forces. But then, suddenly, the clouds above the Cathedral dispersed in a bright flash, and the forces of the Dark were thrown into disarray.
499 years ago: Although the Heroes never returned it seems they succeed. Evil creatures all over the world are found either dead or have retreated back into their holes. The Golden Age begins in both the West and the East. The West, having not been ravaged by Warfare enter into a Renaissance, and due to the influence of the Gnomes technology begins to advance in leaps and bounds. In the East the Empire of Light prospers, and worship of The Light is now a full blown Religion across the whole of the world (although it is strongest in the East). 400 years of peace and prosperity follows.
150 years ago: Tensions between the West and the East begin to grow, despite the urging for calm from the Dwarves. However the populous civilization of the Halflings acts as a buffer between the East and West. Still, the armies of both the East and West are not large and do not grow much. They become weak.
100 years ago: Dragon Fall. The Dragonic mounts of the Heroes return, now corrupt and terriable creatures of Darkness. The Dwarven civilization is essentially wiped out by this event, and the Halfling civilization is also nearly destroyed as the New Sea floods the great plains. Only their great numbers save them from being wiped out like the Dwarves.
During the last 100 years: The Dragon Tyrants divide the world. The Lady takes over the West and establishes herself as a Goddess. This is mostly a bloodless take-over as the majority of the Tiefling nobility collaborates with the Lady. A religious police state is created in the West, and an age of Industry begins with factories bellowing smoke appearing all over the West. Daros remains settled where the Dragons fell, seemingly content to rule amongst the rubble of the Dwarven civilization. Farod settles into piracy and terror amongst the Isles of the New Sea – although in the last 50 years or so his pirates have begun to also raid areas in both the East and West. Kursk’s forces have slowly spread across the Empire of Light, advancing as the Light Wall retreats.
Now: The Wall has retreated all the way back to Anar, and the Hordes of Kursk surround the city. The Wall holds for now… but has its retreat stopped or is this just a pause? Meanwhile, in the West rumors swirl around the location of the Lady. She has not been seen in public for over a decade now yet decrees still come regularly from the palace. The latest order to explore and map the New Sea.
